Slices
Go slices are dynamic views into underlying arrays, defined by a pointer, length, and capacity. Unlike fixed-size arrays, slices are reference-type values that describe a segment of an array rather than containing elements themselves. Copying or passing a slice variable only copies this small descriptor, so multiple slices can share the same backing array data. This efficiency comes with important implications: slicing does not copy elements but creates a new slice header referencing the original array. Thus, modifying elements through one slice affects other slices over the same region, and even a small slice can hold a large array in memory if it points to it. Slices tracking a large underlying array can inadvertently prevent garbage collection of that array—a subtle memory leak if only a small portion is needed.
A slice’s length is the number of elements it currently holds, and its capacity is the maximum length it can grow to without reallocation. You can extend a slice up to its capacity, but attempting to go beyond triggers a runtime panic. When appending elements, if the underlying array lacks space, Go’s runtime automatically allocates a new array, copies existing data, and updates the slice’s pointer and capacity. The growth strategy for slices is tuned for performance: for smaller slices, capacity typically doubles with each growth, and for larger sizes, growth is more gradual (eventually about 1.25× per expansion to avoid huge jumps). This amortizes allocation cost, though excessive small appends can still incur copies. To optimize, production code often uses make with an estimated capacity to minimize reallocations. Overall, slices provide power and flexibility while hiding memory complexity; an experienced Go engineer should understand their behavioral quirks (like sharing memory and growth) to use them safely and efficiently in high-performance backends.

Maps
Go maps are built-in hash table data structures for key-value pairs, offering average O(1) lookups. Like slices, maps are reference types, so a map variable points to an internal data structure and map assignments or function calls pass references, not full copies. This means if you pass a map to a function and update it, the changes reflect in the caller. Maps can be created with make specifying an optional initial capacity. For example, one can wrap a map with an RWMutex to allow multiple readers or one writer at a time. This ensures thread-safety at the cost of some locking overhead.
Maps in Go have important behavioral characteristics. Looking up a nonexistent key returns the zero value for the value type (e.g. 0 for int), with an optional comma-ok idiom to distinguish missing keys if needed. Deleting a key that isn’t present is a no-op (safe to do). The iteration order of a map is deliberately non-deterministic and not guaranteed to be the same from one run to the next. This randomness by design forces correct programs not to depend on any ordering. If a stable order is required, you must collect keys and sort them separately. Being aware of these edge cases is crucial for writing robust back-end code: for example, iterating a map in loops without regard to order, or using the comma-ok idiom to avoid false zero values. In summary, Go maps are highly convenient and efficient, but an experienced engineer will respect their constraints (no concurrent access without locks, unpredictable ordering) and harness their features (zero-value behavior, reference semantics) accordingly.

Goroutines
Goroutines are Go’s lightweight threads, enabling massive concurrency. When you invoke a function with the go keyword, it executes asynchronously as a goroutine, scheduled by the Go runtime instead of the OS. The Go scheduler multiplexes these goroutines onto a smaller set of OS threads, following an M:P:G model (Machine threads, Processes (logical CPUs), Goroutines). In simplified terms, the runtime has a fixed number of Ps (determined by GOMAXPROCS, usually equal to CPU cores) that each execute goroutines in turn, distributing work across M OS threads. The scheduler handles details like parking goroutines that are blocked (e.g. on I/O or channels) and waking others to run, and it performs preemptive scheduling so that long-running goroutines don’t starve others. Since Go 1.14, the scheduler can preempt goroutines in the middle of execution (not only at function calls), improving fairness and latency in long computations.
Understanding goroutine scheduling is key for writing performant, safe back-end systems. Goroutines that perform blocking operations (like I/O or long computations) won’t freeze the whole process – the runtime detaches the blocked goroutine’s thread to handle the block and continues running others on free threads. However, if a goroutine enters a tight CPU-bound loop without function calls or blocking, it could monopolize a thread until preempted. In practice, this is rare and the runtime’s recent enhancements preempt such loops to keep the system responsive. It’s also important to ensure goroutines exit when needed – a common mistake is launching goroutines that never terminate (e.g. waiting on a channel that no one closes), causing memory leaks and wasted CPU. Experienced Go engineers use mechanisms like context cancellation or signals via channels to let goroutines know when to stop work. Overall, goroutines provide a powerful concurrency primitive with minimal overhead, but they rely on the programmer to use them responsibly (cleaning them up, avoiding race conditions) to build safe, scalable concurrent services.

Channels
Go channels provide typed conduits for safe communication between goroutines, forming the backbone of Go’s CSP (Communicating Sequential Processes) concurrency model. A channel is essentially a thread-safe queue with send (chan <-) and receive (<- chan) operations, optionally buffered. Channels are first-class values in Go; they can be passed around and closed to signal completion. Closing a channel is a signal that no more values will be sent. Importantly, only the sending side should close a channel; closing from multiple goroutines or sending on a closed channel will cause a runtime panic. In fact, any attempt to send on a closed channel panics immediately, which helps catch bugs where a sender continues past the intended lifecycle. On the receiver side, reading from a closed channel yields the zero value of the channel’s element type once the channel’s buffer (if any) is drained. This allows receivers to detect closure: a receive operation returns a second boolean result which is false if the channel was closed. A nil channel, in contrast, blocks forever on any send or receive, which can be used to dynamically enable/disable select cases.
The select statement works with channels to wait on multiple communication operations. select allows a goroutine to listen on multiple channels and proceed with the one that becomes ready first, enabling idioms like fan-in, fan-out, or timeouts (using a time.After channel for example). If multiple channels are ready, select chooses one pseudo-randomly, which helps avoid starvation. A default clause in a select can be used for non-blocking sends/receives or to implement timeouts and cancellation. Channels, combined with select, let experienced developers create elegant concurrent pipelines and coordinate many goroutines. However, they are not a panacea for all synchronization – in cases of shared mutable state or high contention, classic locks from the sync package (e.g. Mutex, RWMutex) or atomic operations may be more appropriate. Knowing when to use channels vs. locks is part of writing idiomatic, efficient Go. In an interview setting, one should be ready to discuss channel behaviors (blocking, closing, iterating via for range until closed, etc.) and demonstrate patterns like worker pools, pipeline stages, or the use of sync.WaitGroup alongside channels for synchronization. Defer, Panic, and Recover
Go’s defer mechanism and its panic/recover exception model are crucial for writing robust functions that handle cleanup and errors gracefully. The defer statement schedules a function call to be run after the surrounding function returns, no matter how the return happens (whether via reaching the end, returning explicitly, or due to a panic). Deferred calls execute in Last-In-First-Out order, meaning defers act like a stack – the last deferred function runs first. Each defer evaluates the arguments at the moment of defer, but the function call itself runs later. This can surprise those unfamiliar: if you defer fmt.Println(i) in a loop, the value of i is captured at defer time. Another powerful aspect is that a deferred function has access to the named return values of its function and can modify them (since it runs after the return is initiated but before the function actually returns). This allows techniques like post-processing an error result. In practice, you might see defer func(){ if err != nil { ... } }() to inspect or wrap errors before the function exits.
Panic is Go’s built-in error-handling exception: calling panic(err) immediately unwinds the stack of the current goroutine, running any deferred functions along the way, and if unhandled will crash the program with a stack trace. Panics are intended for unrecoverable conditions – situations that should not occur during normal operation (for example, an invariant violation or an initialization failure that makes the program unable to continue). In well-designed Go programs, panic is used sparingly (e.g., for fatal errors or in library code when a contract is violated). Importantly, a panic unwinds only the panicking goroutine’s stack – it doesn’t directly propagate to other goroutines. If a panic happens in a goroutine and is not recovered, it will terminate the whole program (the runtime detects an unrecovered panic and bails out). This is why we generally avoid panics for routine error handling in server code; an unexpected panic would bring down the entire service if not caught. However, Go provides recover, a built-in function that regains control of a panicking goroutine when called inside a deferred function. If a deferred function calls recover() and the goroutine is panicking, recover will capture the panic value (often an error or string) and stop the panic, allowing the deferred function to handle the situation and the program to resume normal execution from that point. If recover is called when no panic is occurring, it simply returns nil and has no effect. This mechanism is typically used to encapsulate panics in components that should not crash the whole program. For instance, a robust server might launch each request handler in a goroutine with a deferred function that recovers, logs the panic, and continues serving other requests instead of crashing.

Memory Management and Garbage Collection
Go is a garbage-collected language, which means the runtime automatically manages memory allocation and reclamation, freeing developers from manual memory freeing and most memory leak risks. Go’s GC has been optimized over the years for low pause times; as of recent Go versions, typical stop-the-world pauses are on the order of microseconds to a few milliseconds even for large heaps. This makes Go suitable for latency-sensitive server workloads, but the GC is not magic – frequent allocations and a huge live heap can still impact throughput and lead to more CPU time spent in GC. The term GC pressure refers to how hard the collector has to work based on allocation rate and live set size. A high allocation rate (allocating many short-lived objects) will trigger garbage collections more frequently. Fortunately, Go’s allocation is very fast (bumping a pointer in thread-local heap arenas), but each allocation is something the GC must later consider. Another aspect of memory management is knowing when objects allocate on the stack vs. heap. Go has an escape analysis that decides if a variable can be kept on the goroutine’s stack (and thus automatically freed when the function returns) or if it must be allocated on the heap (because it outlives the function or is referenced by the outside). As an experienced developer, you won’t manage memory directly, but you might use tools like go build -gcflags=-m to see if variables escape, to understand performance. For example, taking the address of a local variable or slice element may cause it to escape to heap.
